We knew it was bound to happen, and now, it seemingly has. Calipari, at least for the moment, has cooled off a bit with his recruiting magic. Of course, this could be more by design than it is a real failure to stay in the hunt for some of the biggest names still on the board for the 2010 and 2011 classes. Calipari believes, for perhaps the first time in his career, that he can still be very selective in the players he courts to Big Blue Nation. He's not going to beg, steal, or borrow (thankfully) in order to get the players that other coaches (Such as, but not limited to: The Big Orange Moron, Bruce Pearl) are falling all over themselves to get. Meanwhile, the players with a sense of entitlement are looking for those coaches, those programs that deem the young man as their incoming messiah; and since Cal doesn't seem to be playing that game, UK is being marked off the list by some of the top recruits still looking for a new home (most recently, Joe Jackson and Rakeem Christmas).
So what is Big Blue Nation to take from this recent set of recruiting tidbits? Well, basically nothing. Cal has proven that he can usually get the players he wants and can win with the ones he eventually gets. As for losing out on players like Jackson and Christmas, I don't think Cal and his staff really went hard after either one, so its not a huge surprise that the kids are looking at those that did. Also, we should keep in mind that UK is a very young team, and that there's no way of knowing how long players like Wall, Bledsoe, Hood, Orton, Cousins, Miller and Dodson will stick around. While at least one of those and possibly up to three or four could end up declaring for the draft, there's nothing guaranteed, so some recruits are probably a little unsure of signing on with a team with seven of their top eight players being either freshmen or sophomores.
So, at the end of the day, it is what it is... a cooling off period for Cal and his team of recruiting wizards. However, I think we can all rest assured that another heat up is just around the corner... possibly, as soon as whenever Calipari is ready for it to happen.
