Florida Game Thoughts

Ouch! That was a rough one. We seemed to be able to do nothing all day Saturday. But we can possibly take some solace in a few things.

I ended up scoring some pretty sweet seats in the end zone from a friend. I felt good about that until the first quarter when the game got way to out of hand. Our offense looked stagnant and our defense didn't seem very good (at least not what it should be). The Gators seemed to be able to get what they wanted and go where ever the needed to go. We were dealing with the number 1 team in the nation but after initial reports of Tebow and others being sick prior to the game the feeling of the stadium was that we would have a shot. We would still need to play great, but being at home if we played at our peak I had the feeling that the crowd really thought we were going to upset the Gators, at least scare them. That stayed until the punt block in the end zone (which apparently we are supposed to let Florida do at least once a year, I think we should trying something differently personally, like not letting the block it BUT HEY, what do I know, I'm not a football coach.)

Anyway the crowd still stayed in the game, which was good to see. Most of the people I was sitting around did think we could still get back into it, which is new. That should be a testament to what Coach Brookes has built here. UK is no longer a doormat, we've slugged a few number 1's in the face (LSU 2 years ago) and put some scares into people (like Georgia last year). Where in previous years we never would have been in the game. That's one thing we can take away. I didn't necessarily like the play calling at all times but I'd say, at least with me Brooks has a pretty significant grace period to do whatever he wants. We are getting decent recruits and have been to (and won) 3 straight bowl games. That's incredible. And who cares what bowls they are. My whole life as a UK fan, football has been mostly an afterthought, something to keep me busy until Midnight Madness.

On a side note that highlight of the game was obviously the Tebow sack. That was brutal. I was sitting close enough to hear it (but it was so loud so was everyone else). I'll be honest, that's a guy I would love to hate but can't because he plays the game so hard with such passion and may be the nicest person on earth. So I was glad to see him get up (I was also glad to see him not come back out on the field though). Though the hit does change things for some upcoming matchups that were highly anticipated. http://www.sportspickle.com/might-have-heard:80/kentucky-de-advances-to-face-chuck-norris-in-dramatic-upset Although I'll be honest, as much as I like UK and its players We are a huge underdog and I'd probably take the other guy in this one.

Getting ready for 'Bama...

Our Wildcats played their stiffest competition of the year with only their third game out of the gate. Florida is by leaps and bounds the best team in the country, and UK simply wasn't ready to play in that crucial first quarter. Consider the score after one quarter: 31-0 Florida. The rest of the game, Kentucky was only outscored 10-7, for a final score of 41-7. Had Kentucky played any kind of first quarter, the final score could have been much more respectable.

I hope the team and it's coaches take this into consideration as they prepare for Alabama this weekend. When Kentucky takes the field, they need to know they're more than capable to compete with the likes of Alabama, Tennessee and Florida in the SEC. They need to know that 'Bama is coming into their house and they do not need to give them a welcome gift of silly penalties, questionable play calling, and downright frightened game play. They need to make a statement... early and often.

Come on, boys... jump on this 'Bama team and show them you're for real! Believe.

Kentucky vs. Florida 2009

Cats Get Football Commitment!

Alcoa High School senior Tyler Robinson has decided to play for Rich Brooks and the Kentucky Wildcats. Robinson is a 6' 4" 250 lb TE/DE from Alcoa, TN. He will join former high school teammates Randall Cobb and Kyrus Lanxter when he gets to UK. Congratulations to Coach Brooks and the Cats on their 11th committment. You can read more about Tyler's committment here.

Can the Cats be perfect tonight?

Florida Gators vs. Kentucky Wildcats Preview

Tonight the No. 1 team in the nation will be running on to the field at Commonwealth. Rumors are flying around about the status of Tebow and several other key Florida players as the teams has apparently been hit by the flu. Tebow was not available to any of the media last night and has been reportedly isolated from the rest of the team. I certainly do not wish any of this on the Gators but I am certainly not disappointed that there my may be some distractions to the Gator team. Tonight will take a truly special effort to stay close to this team. The last No. 1 team that came in to Lexington left with a 3-OT loss, but that LSU team was not as fast or talented as this Florida team. Also the 2007 Wildcats were probably more offensively advanced then this year's team. Still, Kentucky has play makers on both sides of the ball. The defense has improved dramatically and there seems to be some optimism that around the nation that this could be a close game. Even Colin Cowherd said that he thought the game would be closer than many. The spread is 21.5 in favor the nation's no. 1 team. I don't know, I just have a feeling the Cats will at the very least cover the spread. It's been a while since Kentucky was in a real fight with one of the SEC's big time teams, maybe since the last time Florida came to town along with the first ever visit of College Gameday. Were not making any predictions here at the BBNR but let's just say we expect to be proud at the end of the night, one way or the other.

Rumor Has It...

Rumor has it that King James himself might be attending Midnight Madness at Rupp Arena next month. This would be an amazing recruiting tool for Cal, especially since several big time recruits are expected to attend the festivities. Can you imagine those kids getting to meet LeBron along with Patterson, Wall and the rest of the UK team with the biggest show in college basketball as the backdrop? Talk about making a lasting impression.

The last time #1 came to Commonwealth?

Poole's Announcement

Thursday, September 24, 2009

Official: Poole is a CAT!!

That's right, after much anticipation, Stacy Poole gave a verbal commitment to the Cats today, live on ESPNU. To those that follow recruiting, this comes as no suprise. However, in recruiting, you just never know. So Mr. Poole, from all of us here at BBNR, welcome to BIG BLUE NATION!

What we know...

It looks like Poole is going to be a Cat, but the official word has yet to be released... stay tuned.

Prediction of the Week!

Michael Toon of the Carlisle Weekly newspaper has predicted a UK victory of Florida. Wow. We hope you're right Mr. Toon!

Tipton: Poole to UK...

Our man Jerry Tipton posted on his blog today that all indications are pointing toward Stacy Poole ending his recruitment today.

“He’s about to commit,” his father, Stacey Poole, Sr., said early Wednesday afternoon. “. . . Everything will be official by the of the day.”

We shall see.. Check back later for confirmation.

The Flu Factor?

Urban Meyer has reported that several Gators are suffering from the flu and were held out of practice yesterday. Could this factor into the game coming up this weekend? Perhaps. I'm sure we all agree that we'll take whatever luck happens to come our way.

Here's the ESPN story about Florida's bout with the flu.

Walker making a comeback?

Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated is reporting that Antoine Walker is in talks with four different NBA teams about joining them in camp for a non-guaranteed contract. Walker could be strongly motivated by his recent legal and financial troubles and might actually come back stronger than what anyone anticipates. We certainly wish him the best of luck.

Poole Update

Poole will announce his college choice at 5:30 PM on Thursday. The annoucement will be shown on ESPNU. Poole has narrowed it down to South Carolina and Kentucky and depending on who you talk to, there's a chance he could end up at either place.

Stay tuned.

Poole to be a Cat?

Larry Vaught says we shouldn't be surprised if Stacey Poole (#58 2010 recruit) announces his decision to become a Wildcat very soon. Consider our fingers crossed... more later.

Just another manic Monday...

Gomez here... sorry I was AWOL over the weekend, guys. Like the rest of the BBNR team, I was out of town and without an internet connection. Matter of fact, I listened to the game on the radio because my motel didn't have a television. Nice, I know, but that's why there wasn't as much reporting as they're usually is on gameday.

Anyway, you guys watched the game, and you know that the Cats squeaked one out against their rivals from upstate. I predicted as much last week, and knew that the game would be nip and tuck, back and forth. But a win's a win, and we'll take it.

Now, its on to Florida, a team that actually looked beatable this past weekend while hosting Tennessee in the Swamp. Florida is coming to Commonweath this year, so I at least predict a much closer game than last year's fiasco. If the defense can hold Tebow in check, and the offense can find a way to convert big plays when needed, there's a small chance the score could be competitive. However, we have to be realistic and understand that Florida is the overwhelming favorite in this game, and the Cats will do good to stay within two or three touchdowns.

Well, that's all for now; I just wanted to give a quick post to get the new week started. We'll have an update on Cal and the bball team later as well as some random reports from the rest of the BBNR team. Stay tuned!

The Nation's University beats City College...again.

It wasn't always pretty but the Cats prevailed over the Cards at a packed Commonwealth on Saturday. There are several things that we learned but maybe the most relevant thing is this; the Cats may not be as good as we thought two weeks ago nor are the Cards as bad. The first half played out as most of us would have expected. UK could of easily been up 20-7 had they not gotten screwed by their own time keeper. Still everyone felt generally confident with a ten point lead at the half. The third quarter changed the complexion of the game and maybe the season for some. The Cats were dominated by the under maned Cardinals. They lost time of possession, total yardage, TO deficit and about every other statistical category throughout the 3rd, even the lead. Yet, the Wildcats responded in the 4th quarter that gives me hope for the rest of the season. The Cats responded with two touchdowns in the 4th and some key defensive plays to hold on to a hard fought 31-27 win. Again, it wasn't pretty but in the end it's still a W. Mike and Gomez will be along later to give some of their thoughts on the game, but for now just enjoy the win. The next couple of weeks could be some dark times across the Big Blue Nation.

UK vs. UL... important game for Cats

Gomez here... For the first time in several seasons, Kentucky is the overwhelming favorite in the big match-up of the in-state rivals, known across the Bluegrass as The Governor's Cup. The Cats are coming off a dominating performance over Miami of Ohio, while the Cardinals somewhat struggled with Indiana State, only managing a modest 20 point victory over a very mediocre team. The Cardinals mainly struggled on offense, only converting 1 out of 9 third down conversions while turning the ball over twice.

However, this could be a trap game for Kentucky. Coming off a lofty victory over a pretty bad Miami of Ohio team, could find some inflated heads on the Kentucky sideline, especially while everyone picks them to beat the overmatched Cardinals by double-digits. Yet, the Cardinals have something to prove, and you know they haven't forgotten the 27 to 2 beating they took last year at Papa John's. Look for the Dirty Birds to be hungry and focused coming into Commonwealth Stadium tomorrow, and for the game to be competitive throughout.

As if the stakes for the rivalry game were not high enough, there are a number of big recruits for both the football and basketball programs expected to be at the game tomorrow. A big win for the Cats in front of a rocking Commonwealth crowd and a national audience watching on ESPNU from home would be a nice way to sell UK athletics to the young prospects in attendance. A loss to Louisville, however, would certainly put a damper on the weekend recruits' festivities.

Another reason this game is so important for the Gridiron Cats is because this is one of the wins that Kentucky has to have if they hope to go bowling for a fourth year in a row. After this week, the grueling SEC season begins, and the victories will only be harder to come by moving forward. Six wins is the magic number, and a Louisville win certainly makes that seem more likely.

Getting Ready for UofL

I am pretty excited about the UofL game. Most of my friends that root for Louisville are scared to death or trying to do a reverse jinx. I have not heard of one Cardinal fan that is looking forward to this game. Its been really fun to hear them squirm when talking about the game. That hasn't happened in a while, even in basketball.

I also have a confession to make. Something I am not proud of...I won't be at the game, even though I have a ticket. I feel terrible about this, b/c it seems to be the first time in recent memory that UK seemed to be the dominant team and Louisville the punching bag. Even last year there was a question. The reason I won't be there is that a "friend" is getting married. I use quotes b/c how good of a friend could he be if he didn't check the football schedule. I mean there was a bye week last week. At least do it on an away game. But I digress. There are enough UK fans that have to attend that will give him crap about this all day, especially if the game is exciting. You can be sure we will have a TV on right up until the wedding starts.

Anyway let me get back to the reason for this long-winded and rambling post (that I am writing in class while trying to avoid getting called on)

Since this is probably our biggest rivalry I thought we needed to have quite a bit of ammunition. So I want to write a few of my favorite UK v. Louisville jokes that I have heard over the years and I want everybody to add their own favorites. This is really supposed to be a public service to our less witty friends who want to tear into the heart of the Louisville backers, or as I call them, idiots.

On to the Jokes, feel free to post in the comments and add your own. Thats what I'd really like, everybody to submit some and then we make a master list.

1. Hey why is my clock always stuck at 1:33 when I drive through Louisville?---Because in Louisville its always 27 to 2. (b/c of score last year)

2. I heard there was a tornado going through Louisville. Everybody is supposed to get to Papa John's Stadium...because there is never a touchdown there.

3. The Louisville Player Profile guide cost double. Because whenever a Louisville player goes to take a picture they always get one from the front and one from the side out of habit.

4. What do you do when there is a graduate of Louisville on your front porch? ----You pay him for the pizza and send him back to work.

5. What do you call a Louisville student with half a brain?----Valedictorian

6. Why are the Louisville Cardinals like a possum? ----Because they play dead at home and get killed on the road.

7. (For the Louisville NFL Prospects) What did the Louisville player get on his Wonderlic Test?---Drool

Thats All I could get cause the bell is about to ring but put your favorites on here

Kentucky reports minor violations...

In what should really be a non-story, ESPN is quick to list the recent reporting of minor NCAA violations by the UK compliance department. As we reported last week, Bilal Batley rebounded for a player earlier this summer, and that's against the rules. One of the other violations reported was when Darius Miller was listed as guest at high school basketball camp. Apparently, John Calipari masterminded both of these schemes to better himself and pad his pockets . Thanks to ESPN and the Associated Press for getting this information out there in such a timely fashion. Meanwhile, UK Prez, Lee Todd remains confident that Cal follows the rules.

UK Linebacker, Ridge Wilson charged...

In what should be a day where the team continues to prepare and focus for the Louisville game, the football program is dealing with the distraction of UK linebacker, Ridge Wilson, suspension from the team due to legal issues resulting from a 4th degree assault charge. Wilson is accused of assaulting a female student on UK's campus.

Coach Brooks has promised to deal swiftly but fairly on this matter. While the suspension is currently only for one game, expect that to widen depending on the severity of the case.

Happy Tuesday (at least Monday's over)!

Gomez here... I'm not too wild about this cover design. To me, it looks like something an 8th grade computer arts class could have done. However, I do like the three individuals on the front, and it excites me just seeing them on the same page together. Look for this book at every Marathon, Kroger, and Wal-Mart from Pikeville to Paducah in the coming days.

More later...

Monday's Notes and Links

We haven't had a whole lot to talk about over the past few days, and for that, we apologize. With the football team taking the week off, and the beginning of the basketball season still over a month away, things are a little slow around here. However, we're digging up some good stories and fun things to talk about over the coming days, and we hope you'll all stick for them. For now, let's dig into a new week of UK news, views, and links for you to check out.

The basketball program had in-home visits with Stacey Poole and Brandon Knight, two of the top recruits for the 2010 class, and both visits reportedly went well. Both are scheduled to attend the UK-Louisville football game on Saturday too. If Cal was to land both of these players, he could very well be putting together another stellar class just one year after assembling one of the best classes of all time. So much for slowing down. Chris Dortch of Blue Ribbon talks with Larry Vaught about the perception of Coach Cal.

The football program also had a bit of recruiting news, as they have landed a 2 star juco safety, Josh Gibbs. Meanwhile, the football team continues to prepare for Louisville which will battle it out on Saturday at noon eastern. The game will be televised by ESPNU. We'll be breaking down the game all week long, and will share our predictions before gameday. Kentucky is an 11 point favorite over the dirty birds according to the Vegas experts.

Kentucky basketball reports secondary violation

The Courier-Journal reports that UK recently informed the NCAA of a secondary rules violation involving former staff member Bilal Batley. Apparently for rebounding for a current UK player back on July 2nd. Batley who was serving as assistant director of basketball operations at the time of the violation, resigned on August 27th because of a family illness. This is not the news fans have been waiting for, but the violation was self reported by the university and is considered to be minor.

The Madness is Closer...

Gomez here. In case you didn't know, Athlon's College Basketball Preview is out and there's lots of talk about Cal and his Cats within its beautiful, glossy pages. They have UK ranked 6th (because I know you were wondering).

As the Madness continues to creep closer and closer, expect to see Cal's smiling face on just about all of the pre-season books that will be released in the coming weeks. Enjoy this time, fans. It's been a while.

Goodman says the writing is on the "Wall"

Jeff Goodman has listed his preseason all americans over on his Fox Sports blog. Goodman hasn't been very complimentary about UK since Tubby left and was overly critical about Billy G. Still, he has some very good things to say about a couple of UK players, Wall and Patterson.

I was a little surprised that Cousins didn't make his all-freshman team but who can argue with his player of the year pick?

Cal is fair and balanced...

Gomez here. Say what you will, but Coach Cal seems to be pretty fair and balanced. A week after upsetting the conservative portion of Big Blue Nation by sending Obama a UK jersey, Cal visited the studios of Fox News and then posted a picture on Facebook. For those of you that do not see the connection, I'll explain it for you. It is widely known that Fox News has a right leaning, conservative slant to their news and views, and the left side of Big Blue Nation is letting him hear about it on Facebook. So far, it seems to all be in good fun though.

Say what you will, but Cal seems to be reaching out to everyone to promote UK basketball, regardless of what their political leanings might be.

Good for him.

Billy Gillispie Checks Into Rehab Facility...

In what has to be a move in the right direction, Billy Gillispie has checked himself into the John Lucas After Care Program in Houston, Texas. Alcohol abuse is a serious matter and hopefully Billy can get his life back on track. More details as they become available.

More pictures from Cal's Visit...

I was fortunate enough to make it out Monday night, to what was a very entertaining event. If anyone in attendance had any doubt about whether Coach Cal was the right man for this job, I am sure he erased those doubts. This guy really gets it, and he's extremely funny to boot. Coach stayed until the last book was signed and even signed some memorabilia for some folks. It was a fun filled event to say the least. So as J.Lee promised, here are a few more pictures I was able to get. I'll spare you any corny captions.

Coach Cal makes a stop in Paducah...

Tonight was a special night for those of us on the western side of the state as Coach Cal spoke to nearly a thousand faithful in downtown Paducah. It was a great night and all the proceeds went to the United Way. Several of us from BBNR were able to attend and there will be plenty of pics and videos added throughout the week. The United Way of Paducah put on quite an event for all in attendance. Cal spoke mainly of his new book "Bounce Back" and I cannot wait to read it. There were also special guests in the house: Winston Bennett, Marie Jackson, Joe Craft, Rod Strickland and Orlando Antigua.

One of the nice moments of the night was when he spoke of the team. You could just see his excitement when he talked about the incoming class (who he said thinks they can poop ice cream) and those that are returning. He spoke highly of all the players but made special mention of Deandre Liggins, who he said was made for the dribble drive offense. He also said Mark Krebs was deserving of the final scholarship and just a great kid. From the way he spoke of Krebs none of us should be surprised if we see him get some floor time. Coach Cal is a great speaker and truly a funny guy.

A big thank you needs to go out to Coach Cal and his staff for coming down and the sponsors who made it happen.

More later...

Happy Labor Day...

We all here at BBNR hope that your having a wonderful Labor Day. We're excited because this Labor Day marks Calipari's first visit to the Jackson Purchase as coach of the Cats. Doors open at 5 PM and from what I understand there are still a few tickets available. The Wildcat faithful in western Kentucky have been excited about this trip every since he was named the head coach. We'll be around later with pictures and impressions from the event in Paducah.

Wendi Nix is underrated, seriously...

Erin Andrews, who? Wendi Nix is hosting game day on ESPN 2 today and looking very nice (using my best Borat voice). It's not just her looks, but Wendi continues to gain creditablity in her analysis of all things football. It's nothing for her to be on a college sideline on Saturday and prowling along media row in the NFL on Sunday. So here's to you Wendi, have a great season at ESPN and we hope to see you in Lexington soon.

Cats thump Miami 42-0

What a great start to the Cat's season? We saw improved play on both sides of the ball, in almost every facet of the game. There is always room for improvement and yes, it was Miami (OH), but it was still a good debut for Coach Rich Brooks' team.

There are so many things to take from this game but none may be more impressive than the maturation of one Mike Hartline. He seemed poised, comfortable and confident throughout. The improved and experienced offensive line consistently gave Mike time in the pocket and he did not disappoint. Mike's line on the day was 18/27, 222 Yds, 2 TD, 0 INT. He didn't play much in the 4th quarter or I am sure his line would of been even more impressive.

As I said earlier, Randal Cobb is going to be a lot of fun to watch this season. He is an absolute monster on offense and can be the difference between another "decent" season or possibly contending for a New Year's Day bowl. He gives Joker so many different options. Whether he is lining up as a wide out, taking a direct snap or receiving on special teams, he is someone that will be tough for SEC defenses to prepare for. Cobb finished with 107 total yds and 2 TD. Savor him folks, he truly is special.

We would be re missed if we didn't mention the defense. We are a little spoiled, expecting them to do great things every game, but what they did today was remarkable. The Wildcats pitched their first shut out since 1996! After a sluggish start the D dominated the last three quarters. Senior corner Trevard Lindley had an INT return for a TD, moving him to 4th on the all-time UK list with 10.

Just an all around good day for the Cats as so many things went well. The Cats have an off week next weekend before hosting the Cards on Sep. 19th. More thoughts from the staff throughout the holiday weekend, but for now enjoy the win and start getting ready for our cross state rivals.

Half Time thoughts from the BBNR staff

UK 21
Miami(OH) 0

Half Time

The BBNR staff has gathered together at the "Cat Cave" to kick off the season, and here are some of our first half impressions...

Michael: I have been pleasantly surprised with the efficiency of Mike Hartline. Remember it was Andre Woodson's junior year when he really grasped the offense and lead the team.

Chris: After a sluggish start the defense has really been strong in the second quarter. It took an INT to really wake the Cats up and turn the momentum of the half.

Johnathan: One of my biggest concerns is the poor tackling. They'll have to get better before taking on the faster, more athletic play makers in the SEC. The most positive thing is the line play on both sides of the ball. Even with a third string Center, the offensive line has consistently given Hartline time, and the D-Line has been strong as expected. (In other news, I would love to be a linebacker for Minnesota today. Greg Paulas anyone?)

Jeremy: Wow, Randal Cobb is a beast. It's so nice to see him back on the field and healthy. We are now getting an understanding of what our team may have looked like down the stretch last season. He is the best play maker on our team and if the first half is any indication it's going to be a fun year in Lexington.

Today's Match-Up...

Kentucky vs. Miami

It's game day. . .

And what better way to kick off the new season then with one of the best pre-game speeches in sports movie history?

Stay tuned for game impressions and thoughts from the BBNR staff throughout the day.

T-Minus 3 Days. . .

Kick off is just three days away so it's time to switch gears and get ready for the upcoming season. I have been debating the possible record the Cats could have at the end of the season, and I am still torn on a few of the match-ups. However, time is slipping away so I have to go with my gut and finalize my predictions. I won't, however, pretend to have all the answers and give scoring predictions for each game. I believe the Cats' defense will keep them in games and give them the opportunity to steal one or two. The offense also seems to be ahead of where it was a year ago. Hartline may be ready for a breakout year, and the offensive line is the strongest it's been in Brooks' time in Lexington.

Sep. 5 Miami(OH): The Cats open up the season in Cincinnati with a game against the Red Hawks. It should be a good test for them on a neutral field. Still the Cats' defense should hold down the fort and help the Cats win comfortably. WIN

Sep. 19 Louisville: The Cats get their arch rivals at home this season which should help them. The Cardinals have a new QB and a lot of changes in the coaching staff, so to say they are rebuilding is an understatement. Still they have some play makers and will be in the game until the end. However, I think the Cats' home field advantage, two weeks of practice, and consistently strong defense will help the Cats pull away in the second half. WIN

Sep. 26 Florida: Not much to break down here. Tim Tebow and the most talented team in the country will win going away...again. LOSS

Oct. 3 Alabama: It won't get any easier the next when the Tide rolls into to Lexington. I don't think this game will be as lopsided as the prior week's, but I still can't see the Cats pulling it out either. LOSS

Oct. 10 South Carolina: Some say the Gamecocks are a darkhorse in the SEC East, and it's hard disagree. Coupled with that fact is the reminder that this year's game is in Columbia; so, I think it'll be a tough one for the Cats to find a way to win on the road. I think it could be a close game but the Cats will come up just short. LOSS

Oct. 17 Auburn: The Tigers are a bit of mystery in the SEC West this season. They had a lot of folks scratching their heads with the hiring of Gene Chizik from Iowa State in the off season. Yet, he does know Auburn Football and shouldn't be judged on what he did at ISU. Remember he was 13-0 as the defensive coordinator at Auburn. Still this could be another long year for the Tigers as the offense doesn't seem to be much better than they were last season. I think the Cats' defense will hold them at bay and win the game for Coach Brooks. WIN

Oct. 24 Louisiana-Monroe: The Cats return back to friendly Commonwealth with what should be an easy victory. The Warhawks just don't have the playmakers to hang with the Cats who should be fine tuned by this point in the season. WIN

Oct. 31 Mississippi State: The Cats hope to have plenty of treats and not tricks when the Bulldogs roll into town for their annual game. MSU has a new coach in Dan Mullen but it's hard to believe he'll have much to work with this season. MSU does not have much upfront on offense which could be the only advantage the Cats need to win this one. Mullen will turn it around down there, just not this season. WIN

Nov. 7 Eastern Kentucky: The Cats shouldn't have any problems here, so I am not going to waste my time breaking the game down. OVC vs. SEC in November? If this game is even close then I'll be disappointed. WIN

Nov. 14 Vanderbilt: Vandy has some players coming back but lost alot on defense which was their strongest attribute last season. The offensive line has been kept together for the most part, but it wasn't anything to write home about last season. I think the Dores just won't have enough playmakers to score enough points against the Cat's tough defense. WIN

Nov. 21 Georgia: The Bulldogs were a sexy pick to win it all last year but didn't live up to expectations. They lost several key position players including star QB Matt Stafford. Still it's Georgia, and they simply reload instead of rebuild. If the Cats played the Dawgs earlier in the year then I would see hope, instead they'll get them in November when they should of had time to pull it all together. LOSS

Nov. 28 Tennessee: The Vols are coming back to Lexington this season where they have found a way to win several close games over the last decade. Still this is a game the Cats can win! Crompton wasn't good at QB last season and the offense was just horrid. They have a decent class coming in but it's hard to believe they'll be able to contribute this season. If the Vols' offense is questionable again, this game is where the Cats will finally break the streak, and I think they will. WIN

Final Record: 8-4, Outback Bowl

I know it's hard to believe that the Cats could be playing on New Year's Day this year, but I see it happening. The Cats are catching Tennessee and Auburn at the right time for big time wins. Those two games, along with Louisville are the key games of the season. If the Cats find a way to win those three and don't give games like Vanderbilt and Mississippi State away, the football Cats could keep the attention away from Cal's Cats for a few months this fall.

Stock Report: SEC Basketball

It is difficult to look at the prospects of SEC basketball programs and find those destined for failure. Every school has its reasons to be excited about the future, but some are better bets than others. I am going to list which school's futures I would invest in, in reverse order, to help get an idea of what the future might hold for each SEC program. Today, we will look into the crystal ball and at the bottom half of the SEC futures.

12. Georgia

I can't recommend the Bulldogs just yet, even though they hired a coach with a record of winning in former Nevada coach Mark Fox. The talent level in the state of Georgia gives the Bulldogs a great recruiting base, similar to the one Billy Donovan inherited at another SEC Football powerhouse. The question I have is, can Fox stave off every other coach in the country and keep top talent in-state? Georgia has always been able to pull in a couple of top players, but rarely fields a team chock full of talent. I am not sure if they can be anything more than a team composed of a couple questionable characters with talent surrounded by random and nonathletic white guys like Dave Bliss.

11. Auburn

I like Jeff Lebo, and the Tigers have a state of the art basketball facility on the way for 2010. I just don't understand how either are going to cause Auburn fans to notice. By the time 2010 rolls around the Tiger faithful will be more interested in who their new football coach will be than anything to do with their basketball program. That isn't going to cut it in the new SEC.

10. South Carolina

The Gamecocks feel like a team that is going to dominate the NIT for years to come. Darrin Horn is a good in-game coach, but seems like the intense type that could run off players and let his competitive nature talk himself into questionable character talent (Kinda like that Gillispie guy). I am a little skeptical of a coach that is three times more enthusiastic than Dwight Perry on a sugar rush. Horn reminds me a little of Quinn Snyder and that isn't a good thing for the Cocks.

9. Ole Miss

Andy Kennedy is a very good coach if you can keep him away from middle-aged taxi cab drivers. He has some talent for the upcoming season, even a potential first round pick in Terrico White, who could help elevate the Rebel program. I just don't see Ole Miss being anything more than a team that makes the Sweet Sixteen every couple years. That would be a great accomplishment for this program, but that seemingly short ceiling keeps them from being higher on this list.

8. Mississippi State

Mississippi State is the favorite for second place in the SEC this season. I am just not comfortable recommending these Bulldogs down the road though. I can't see them landing top recruits that don't have big question marks surrounding them. They have done pretty well for themselves in recent years, but I just can't see a top program residing in Starkville, Miss.

7. Arkansas

I put them here because they have a little more upside than the other programs. They probably have the second most rabid fan base in the SEC which means something to a Wildcat fan. I can still remember the Hogs of the 90's being a worthy adversary, and wouldn't mind them getting back to that level. The talent is there for a run this season. Arkansas is a sleeping giant, and it will only take one good season to awaken them. The biggest question mark is their Coach. Is he ready for the big time, or should he go back to Billy D's comforting teet? If Pelphry can handle the pressure he has a chance to take the Razorbacks up this list and be a perennial top 25 team.
