Kelly to Notre Dame

The World Wide Leader is reporting that Brian Kelly will soon be named the new head coach for the Fighting Irish. I think this is a slam dunk hire for Notre Dame. Sure, names like Stoops and Meyer were at the top of their wish-list, but those guys aren't going anywhere. At the end of the day, this is the absolute best choice from the guys that would have taken the job.

I think he'll win big at Notre Dame, but he has to hire the right defensive coordinator. While Kelly may be a brilliant offensive mind, the Irish haven't had a good track record with those type of coaches. However, it should be noted that Kelly has a ton of head coaching experience, something their past coaches have lacked. Kelly went 34-6 in three years at Cincinnati, at Cincinnati! He also has a great track record against Top 10 teams (9-3), another area that Weis and the Irish struggled.

This isn't UK news, but since Coach Cal called Kentucky the "Notre Dame of College Basketball" I guess it sorta qualifies? Maybe?

  1. Kelly is a great hire... I guess that even the Catholic Church is willing to gloss over the whole 'pro-life/pro-choice' debate for a winning record...

  2. Yea any time the "most storied program" in college football can get a guy w/ a 53-22 record that played linebacker at assumption college, you gotta make that deal. On the plus side he won a D-II championship

I think he's gonna go over about like Billy G.

  3. You failed to mention he took Cincy to a BCS Bowl this year with a 12-0 record and a Big East Championship. He is also 9-3 against Top 10 opponents. Make not mistake, he is far more tested than G was on the hardwood.

  4. How tough is it for the Cincy kids? They bust their tails all season long to the tune of 12-0, and what do they get? To play in the Sugar Bowl without the coach that lead them there. I don't understand the timing, Kelly could've at least stayed long enough to coach them in their bowl game.

  5. Yea, it really sucks for the kids left at Cincinnati for sure. It would of been like Cal leaving Memphis for UK before the NCAA tournament. I understand Notre Dame wanting to get him place for recruiting, but it's still a tough pill for the folks left behind.

  6. Midge here-

It's business boys; that's all it is; nothing personal towards the Cincy kids. I'm sure if they were in his shoes and had a chance to make the benjemins he's going to make, they would have done the same thing.
Sports is the same as life; gotta get what you can get when you can get it; sad though...goes to show you where people's priorities are in life. Money, money , money' that's all eveyone thinks about.
