Gomez here...
After a slow week last week, we're getting off the new week to a bang today...
:: Of course, the big news from yesterday was that the Tennessee Vols (minus four of their top 8 scorers) upset #1 Kansas. This will most likely bump Kentucky up to number #2 in both major polls, but we'll have to wait a couple of hours to know that for sure. But the main thing to take away from this is that Tennessee's demise was prematurely predicted by many, including myself. UT played hard, passionate ball yesterday, and they proved that they're still a team to be reckoned with. Kentucky doesn't play at Tennessee until February 13th, but that's a date to circle on your calendars. It should be a good one.
:: After Depaul pulled the trigger and fired Jerry Wainwright, Tracy Webster, former UK assistant coach under Billy Clyde, was named the interim head coach. This is a good opportunity for Coach Webster to prove he's ready for a seat at the big table, and we wish him well.
:: DeAndre Liggins seems to be a popular topic of discussion around Kentucky water-coolers today. The kid has shown the ability to defend and make nice shots in clutch situations. If it weren't for DeAndre's play, we might have lost the SEC opener to Georgia. It's nice to see him continue to get minutes and for the kid to make the most of them.
:: Kentucky travels to Gainesville tomorrow night to take on the Gay-tors of Florida (11-4). Billy Donovan's squad has had their ups and downs this season, and they're coming off a loss at Vandy, but you can bet they're looking forward to the opportunity to redeem themselves on national television tomorrow. Florida might have fair weather fans that view basketball as something to watch until spring football, but they'll be out in full force for the UK match up on ESPN. Our Wildcats will have to play much better than they did against Georgia, or the they'll be going home with their first loss.
:: In what I consider a shocker, Pete Carroll left the friendly confines of USC football to venture back into the wilds of the NFL. I guess people that knew the situation better might not have been as shocked, but it seems Pistol had a good thing going at USC and great job security. Why he would leave for the NFL again is beyond me. Unless its the multi-million dollar contract. I guess that could have something to do with it. That and he's most likely scared of Joker Phillips leading UK to be the dominant program in all of college football.
Well that's all for now... we'll be back later with more tidbits.
