Let's be honest, things are really good on the sports front here in the Commonwealth. Basketball on both the Men's and Women's side are trucking along. So it's understandable that some of us are having a hard time looking ahead to UK football in the fall. However, with a new regime in place, headed by former offensive coordinator Joker Phillips, today is a big, big day for the Kentucky football program.
If you've turned on any sports channel or tuned into any sports radio show, you know it's National Signing Day. It's sort of a holiday for some programs. Sure, UK has not exactly been on the same level of recruiting as say a USC or Florida (or Texas and so on), and we probably won't be anywhere close to that level any time soon; but if the UK football future is anything like today, it's looking brighter and brighter all the time.
I'm certainly no expert in the field of football recruiting but I've been trying to stay in tune with breaking news all day with the experts around the commonwealth via twitter. It appears that UK has had a couple surprises and toss ups that have made this class one of it's better according to the rankings.
The Cat's currently have 20 players with signed a LOI including a big surprise and pick up in 3/4 star RB Brandon Gainer out of Miami. The Cat's also made a splash with 3/4 star TE Alex Smith out of Cincinnati and a huge list of 3 star prospects; including, Joker's first "get" in a head to head recruiting contest with Charlie Strong from Louisville. Joker stole LB Tim Patterson right out of Louisville, which is very nice to see. Patterson played for the Louisville Central Yellow Jackets just as Corey Peterson, Mister Cobble, and Ridge Wilson. Joker also reeled in the states #2 prospect, RB Miles Simpson, who played at Simon Kenton High School. Another guy that excites me for some reason is Jerrell Priester, an ATH out of South Carolina. In reading about him, he sounds a lot like a Randall Cobb type player: very strong and athletic and explosive. It'll be interesting to see what position (or in Cobb's case positions) this guy gets to play.

At the moment Jody Demling has UK's class ahead of Louisville's. Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come. Overall, it looks to be an exciting day for Joker and his new crew in their efforts to carry out "Operation Win".
* On a side note the SEC is dominating signing day with 3 of the top 5 classes and 7 of the top 17! And now you know why it's so difficult to recruit in the SEC. These rankings are over on ESPN and are current at the moment but could obviously change and the day goes on.
Florida (1) Alabama (2) Auburn (3) LSU (7) Georgia (9) Tennessee (11) and South Carolina (17)
