Good evening, Big Blue Nation...
The Cats are heading down to Athens to take on the Bulldogs in what has become a very important game for Kentucky. With their recent loss at Tennessee, and Syracuse's rise to the #1 ranking, things are sorta getting crowded at the top as everyone makes their best case for a #1 seed. A loss tomorrow could easily move Kentucky down to the #2 line, especially if Kansas State and Duke were to both win. Yes, the Cats have to take care of business tomorrow night if they want to stay in the #1 slot.
As you might have read earlier, Cal plans on Ramon having a more active role in the game, and we're not sure how we feel about that. While we're happy Ramon will get some playing time as his UK career winds down, we don't like the idea of DeAndre Liggins moving in the opposite direction. It seems DeAndre has earned his playing time, and we'll need his energy down the stretch. But you know what... Cal didn't ask us what we thought, nor do we make the big bucks, so I guess we just have to trust him on this one.
On Sunday, we play Florida at home which will be Senior Day at UK. Rumor has it that UK will recognize Patrick Patterson during the event, which would offer further proof that Patterson is indeed intending to turn pro after this season. Kentucky did the same thing for Jamal Mashburn at the end of his junior season, as well, and its certainly a nice gesture. On a side note, no word on whether or not Kentucky plans to recognize Michael Porter, but I hope they do.
Speaking of Florida, they had a real shot to play their way into the NCAA tournament tonight since they were hosting Vanderbilt at home, but they lost to the Dores, 64-60. In my opinion, this would leave them having to beat Kentucky on Sunday to make the field, without winning two or three games in the SEC tourney. For now, I think we have to consider them still on the bubble, but its not looking good.
While we're talking about the bubble, our former coach, Tubby Smith has certainly been sliding in the wrong direction, and tonight's loss might have knocked them out of any consideration on Selection Sunday; that is, outside of an unlikely run through the Big 10 tourney. Minnesota absolutely got killed by Michigan tonight, 83-55. And with that thumping, the NIT will most likely await Tubby and the Gophers at season's end.
Well, that's all for now. We'll have lots more to talk about tomorrow as we preview the Georgia game, so stay tuned right here, folks.
