I am in such disbelief about the Slick Rick stuff that I am not even sure what to write about it. Mike did a fine job of describing the situation and the way most of us feel. I can honestly look back at the Pitino years and think about them with great pride of what was accomplished. However, it's clear now that we won despite Rick, not because of him. Honestly, just about any hard working, professional coach should be able to win at Kentucky. It doesn't take rocket science or a magic bullet. (Note: Gillispie was hard working, but wasn't a professional nor a good coach. He does not apply to this forumla. Carry on...)
I honestly think Rick was simply at the right place at the right time. He hasn't really done much of anything since the 1996 & 1997 back to back National Championship appearances. He didn't win at Boston, and honestly, he's been a little disappointing at Louisville. I am sure the Card fans thought there would be a banner hanging in Freedom Hall by now, but it hasn't happened under his watch and in light of recent events, I don't see it happening any time soon.
Now, Ricky has had some decent success no doubt, but he hasn't been the savior of Louisville Basketball that people thought he would be and time will not be as kind to him as his predecessor. Could he have went to Memphis and done what Cal did there? If you take away Pitino's run at UK then he's just a good coach, not great. I think we all have waited for him to recapture that magic again and it just hasn't happened. Now, it seems likely that it never will.
I just wonder what Rick and his family are thinking right now? What went wrong? How did he end up at this lowly state? I don't have the answers for Mr. Pitino or his family, but he may want to book a one way ticket out of Louisville for Hill Valley because Marty McFly is the only one who can possibly help him now. The year 1996 would do just fine. . .
True, dat, Jerms. Good post.
