Later today, Kentucky takes on Auburn in a battle of the Cats. Okay, it probably won't be much of a battle, but we'll preview it nonetheless.
The Tigers have had a rough season so far, with some pretty bad losses to some pretty bad teams: Troy, Sam Houston State, Central Florida and Missouri State. However, Auburn did manage to play Florida State, North Carolina State, and South Carolina in close games, and nearly beat all three. They also outplayed Tennessee for a half before the Vols used a huge second half run to put them away.
The difference between the good Tigers and the bad Tigers is a pretty simple variable, and that's whether or not their three point shots are falling. Cal said yesterday that he expects them to jack up about 30 three point shots, and if 20 of them happen to fall, he thinks the Cats will be handed their first loss.
Yet, the Cats will have a clear advantage at every position, and if they learned anything from the second half of the Tennessee game, our boys in blue will force the ball inside because they Tigers will have no answer for it. Meanwhile, the Tigers will struggle to keep anyone in front of Wall or Bledsoe all day. Like Cal predicted, their only real hope of pulling off the upset is to shoot the ball well from three point range, and that also happens to be something that Kentucky has failed to defend well on a consistent basis. And as we all know, every SEC game is a battle, especially on the road.
With that said, Kentucky should take care of business today. Even if Auburn shoots the ball decently, they'll have no way to stop the inside attack of Cousins, Patterson and Orton, or the Kentucky guard play. I predict Kentucky will win by 17 or so, and then enjoy a week off before hosting Arkansas next Saturday.
