Of course this game meant something to the Big Blue Nation as Texas was the only other undefeated team left in all of Division 1 basketball. The Texas loss gives Kentucky an opportunity to take the #1 spot for the first time since 2003. It's been a roller coaster ride in Lexington since the last time the Cats graced the top of the polls, and it was less than a year ago that Kentucky was irrelevant in the college basketball universe, missing the NCAA tournament for the first time in 18 years. (Thanks Clyde!)
Now, we shouldn't get too excited just yet. First off, the Cats have to play a much improved Arkansas team Saturday for the right to sit atop the rankings. Hopefully, they'll be ready to put their horrid second half performance against Auburn behind them, and with a little something extra to play for, I see Kentucky playing inspired basketball on Saturday.
The other thing to consider is what being ranked #1 in mid-January actually means, which isn't much. However, when you think about watching the Cats in the NIT last March, Big Blue Nation will surely appreciate this remarkable return to not only relevance, but dominance in college basketball. Still, at least for now, we're ranked only #2, and we have another game to win to earn that top spot. I would imagine Pel and the Razorbacks would love to play the part of the spoiler this weekend, and will come into Rupp ready to play.
Still, its a very exciting time for Kentucky fans. Go Big Blue!
