Which unbeaten will fall first?

Gomez here...

On November 1st, there were 347 undefeated teams in NCAA Division 1 basketball. On January 5th, only four remain... Kansas, Texas, Kentucky and Purdue. These four teams make up the top four in both major polls this week, and are probably the safest picks for Final Four predictions. However, there's no way all four (or possibly even just one) of these teams will go undefeated all season. With that in mind, lets break down the teams and see which team has the best shot at going down first...

1.) Kansas - My prediction: First Jayhawk loss will be January 30th at Kansas State. The next big game for Kansas is this Sunday at Tennessee. However, with the current state of affairs being as they are in Knoxville, there's no way of knowing what kind of line up Bruce Pearl will be able to play this weekend. If Tyler Smith is out of the line up, and many believe he will be, then there's little chance for the Vols to pull off the upset. After their date with Tennessee, Kansas's next test will be at Kansas State on January 30th.

2.) Texas - My prediction: First Longhorn loss will be January 18th at Kansas State. Okay, so I'm predicting KSU to be a giant killer this month, but why not? They're 13-1, ranked number 10 in the nation, and have a strong home court advantage. They're also very well coached and play intense defense. I expect a battle when these teams meet, but I think KSU will squeak one out. Texas plays Kansas at home on February 8th, so we know if both are still undefeated going into that game, one of the teams will go home with their first loss of the season.

3.) Kentucky - My prediction: First Wildcat loss will be January 12th at Florida. I predicted this a while back, and I'm going to stick with it, though I'm not nearly as sure as I was when I first made it. After this, its hard to say what team in the SEC will beat Kentucky, if any. Ole Miss is tough but we're playing them at Rupp, which certainly helps. At Tennessee, at South Carolina, at Mississippi State, and at Vandy will all be tough tests for this young team, as well.

4.) Purdue - My prediction: First Boilermaker loss will be January 9th at Wisconsin. Purdue is tough, and if you don't believe me, just watch the second half of the West Virginia game. Their home court advantage might be the best in the league, so its hard to believe they'll lose any Big 10 games on their own court. However, Wisconsin is solid and their home court advantage is also formidable, so I think they'll hang Purdue with their first loss this weekend.
