Remember when Shakespeare in Love rooted out Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture in the 1999 Oscars? Some people wondered how Shakespeare was even nominated, so to say it pulled off an upset with its win over the heavily favored and much more deserving Saving Private Ryan would be an understatement of grand proportions. Well, that's how I felt today when I learned Kevin Stallings was awarded the Coach of the Year honors over Kentucky head coach John Calipari.
Now, if Bruce Pearl had won, I could have lived with that. Pearl had done a good job of pulling his team together after the Tyler Smith arrest, and his team never lost their heart or passion for the game. But no, Pearl didn't win it either... Kevin Stallings did.
The only answer I can come up with for this fiasco is that the SEC coaches really don't care for Bruce Pearl or John Calipari either one, so the award is nothing more than a popularity contest. The most likeable guy with a winning record is going to win the award, I guess. There's no way that Kevin Stallings did a better job coaching than Calipari or Pearl either one, and it's really just a joke to even try to make an arguement to the otherwise.
I guess another possibility would be that the other SEC coaches are just jealous of UK's and UT's recent success, both on the court and on the recruiting trail. Or maybe jealously and dislike are the same thing; I don't really know, nor do I care. I just know that its just plain stupid for anyone other than Calipari or Pearl to win this award, and I needed to get this little rant off my chest. Thanks for listening.
More later.
