Scouting Report: Sam Houston State

Kentucky Wildcats vs.

Sam Houston State Bearkats (2-0)

Location: Rupp Arena
Time: 6 PM CST/7 PM EST
Event: Opening Game of Cancun Classic
Television Coverage: BBSN, ESPN360

Tidbits:
Sam Houston State has never won a game against a SEC opponent (0-11) but this is the first time they have played Kentucky.  They have never won a game against a top 25 opponent either (0-12).  We're sure this is bulletin board material for the SHS coaching staff.

Who to watch: Junior transfer center Gilberto Clavell leads the team in scoring with 15 points per game. Also scoring in double figures are guards Corey Allmond (14) and Ashton Mitchell (10).

What they do best: The Bearkats like to get after it on the defensive end.  The Kats have held their first two opponents to a .272 shooting mean, and are out-scoring their foes 82 to 48 points per game and have dominated on the boards 90 rebounds to 65.

Where UK will have the advantage: The inside game should be a point of focus for UK.  The Bearkats have small interior players, playing at times 6'6" Clavell at center.  The front court of Patterson, Cousins, Orton, and Stevenson should have an overwhelming size advantage.

What the Bearkats are saying: "This is an outstanding opportunity for our program to play the winningest college basketball program of all time," SHSU head coach Bob Marlin said.  "Our guys have played well and they are stepping up.  They have battled and I'm pleased with how they are playing. We had the size advantage in our first two games, but that role is reserved.  Kentucky has a lot of height and talent upfront. This will be a different challenge for us."

Prediction: Kentucky should win, and win handily.  However, we said the same thing against Miami, and that one was a nailbiter.  Hence the word "should."

Stay tuned for more later...
