I will admit that I have not seen this UConn team play this year. I can only look on paper to see what kind of team they have. Luckily, as the saying goes, games are played on paper so I should be fine...
The first thing that stands out when you look at UConn's roster is they get most of their production from their starters, specifically their back court. This might be the best starting back court we face all year. Jerome Dyson and Kemba Walker are talented, experienced, and they produce. They are averaging over 35 points per game combined. It will be interesting to see how Wall and Bledsoe can match up with these two.
All five starters for UConn average over 30 minutes a game. Compare that to UK who has only 2 players averaging 30+ minutes (although Bledsoe and Miller do average 29), and it would appear that UK could enjoy an advantage it depth. UConn's sixth man, Jamaal Coombs-McDaniel averages 12 minutes a game. We have three players getting more clock coming off the bench.
As is the tradition for UConn big men, this team is active on defense. They routinely lead the country in blocked shots, and average ten per game this year. We should enjoy a decided advantage down low, but they might have the meat down low to make it tough to score in the interior.
Former UK recruit Ater Majok has spent the last year and a half trying to become eligible to play. He still won't be available to play against the Cats, but hopefully he can gain eligibility sometime before he turns 30. Given their lack of depth, they could definitely use him.
UConn might lack depth, but they are still a talented and dangerous team. They handled LSU by 26 earlier in the year, and lost their only real test to Duke. Like Kentucky, it is impossible to tell how good UConn is based on their early results. What we do know is they are more experienced than we are, and shouldn't be intimidated by Madison Square Garden. Should be a good game, and another big barometer for our young squad.

Tomorrow night's game is going to be tough. I think Kentucky has a great shot to win, but its going to be a good contest I think. The guard match-ups will be awesome to watch.
ReplyDeleteUCONN usually can beat themselves when it comes to the big game. They seem to lose their heads at times this year. Duke game is a great example. They lost their composure during that game. I think if we keep it close, they will fold. If we jump out on them like the UNC game, I dont think they have what it takes to come back. Do we have to cheer for Florida against Syracuse?
