Huge recruiting weekend. . .

This weekend is shaping up to be a pretty big weekend in regards to basketball recruiting. First of all, tomorrow starts the Boo Williams Nike Elite Event in Virginia. The format has changed for this event, moving away from a traditional tournament format to a new round robin format, which will allow all teams to play 5 games each. This will give each recruit more time to impress their would be suitors.

Several key players from the 2011 class that interests Cal the most will be playing, among them the top two players in the country: Marquis Teague and Mike Gilchrist. Teague has been classified as a Louisville lean for quite some time, but several analysts believe Cal has made up some serious ground and could win the battle for his services. Gilchrist on the other hand seems to be down to 'Nova or UK, but no on really seems to know who has the edge at this point. Austin Rivers, who opened back up his recruitment this week, will also be among the headliners. Rivers, who could be headed to the ACC, also mentioned Kentucky as a possible destination this fall.

While the 17 and under crowd will be on the east coast this weekend, the seniors will be at the Nike Hoop Summit in Portland, Oregon. Some of the big names left on Cal's board will be there, including Brandon Knight and Terrance Jones. Also, current UK commitment, Enes Kanter will be there playing for the World Team.

Coaches cannot attend the Nike Summit, but you can bet there will be plenty of them in-town to speak with them before and after the game. If you'll remember, Coach Cal gave John Wall his last plea after the event last year. Maybe he plans to do the same with Knight? Coach Cal is on the west Coast with John Wall as he is a finalist for the Wooden Player of the Year. Various sources has Cal already lined up to visit Terrance Jones, so it stands to reason he'll talk to Knight while he's over there, as well.

Yesterday, Coach Cal made two in-home visits, first to C.J Leslie in North Carolina and then to Doron Lamb in Virginia. Reportedly, both players came away impressed as Coach Cal brought along both Coach Strickland and Coach Antigua for the visit, as well. Some folks has Leslie leaning back toward his hometown NC State Wolf Pack, so let's hope Cal works his magic. As for Lamb? Well it appears, according to various sources, that he is down to UK and KU, with no real leader between the two.

At any rate, expect the chips to start falling soon. With major spring events happening all over the country and with coaches being able to make their final sales pitch, it's only going to get more interesting in the coming days. This is amplified by current college players finally making their decisions to either stay in school or enter the NBA draft.

Stay tuned. . .
